There was celebration at Autism Assistance Dogs Ireland (AADI) in October as proud Labrador parents, Omma and Mango, welcomed a record-breaking litter of fifteen healthy puppies (nine boys and six girls) into the world at their foster home in Tipperary.
Born between 4:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. on October 22nd, this is the largest litter in AADIâs history, marking a joyful milestone in the charityâs mission to transform the lives of autistic children through professionally trained assistance dogs.
To honour their arrival, the new pups have been affectionately nicknamed The Superhero Litter. Each one is named after a superhero, reflecting the strength, courage, and life-changing role they will grow into.
Every puppy born here has the potential to become someoneâs superhero,â said Elaine Cannon, Brood Programme Manager at Autism Assistance Dogs Ireland. âOmma has been an incredible mom, and we couldnât be prouder. This litter represents hope for so many families who are still waiting for their chance to experience the freedom and safety an assistance dog provides.
đž A Lifeline for Autistic Children
This joyful arrival comes at a time of rising demand: AADI has seen a 53% increase in interest for its services over the last two years. In 2025 alone, over 1,000 families expressed interest, but with no government funding, the charity could only commit to supporting 38 families.
An assistance dog isnât just a companion, itâs a lifeline,â added Elaine Cannon. âFor many autistic children, things like visiting a park or going to the shop can feel unsafe and overwhelming. These dogs bring safety, confidence and freedom.Â
Each assistance dog costs âŹ25,000 to train, and AADI never charges families – believing every child should have access to support, regardless of their means.
The Journey Begins
Over the next two years, the Superhero Litter will begin their transformation from playful puppies into expertly trained assistance dogs. Behind the scenes, volunteer puppy raisers like Bridget and Robert Kirwan played a vital role in giving them the best possible start.
By supporting us today,â said AADI CEO Nuala Geraghty, âyouâre not just making a donation. Youâre giving a child independence, opening doors to new experiences, and helping families live more freely together.
Help Us Train Irelandâs Next Generation of Superheroes
AADI has delivered 138 assistance dogs to families since its founding, but the need continues to grow. With your help, we can support even more children on the autism spectrum to live safer, more independent lives.
